In reading the book, "Sitting at the Feet of Rabbi Jesus," (highly recommend), the authors mention that based on Jewish tradition, Issac was in his thirties when Abraham took him to be sacrificed. This may have only been news to me, but when I learned this it changed my outlook on these verses. Before I thought of Issac as a scared child with this knife hovering over him. When learning the Jewish interpretation, I now see the situation as a unified act of obedience. Issac was also willing to make the sacrifice. Both Abraham & Issac were willing to heed to God's direction and not their own, possible foreshadowing even more depth in Jesus' eventual sacrifice? Man's ability to act in free will & choosing to obey God & not forced coercion.
Also, speaking of trees, the Tamarisk Tree, so much there! Genesis 21:33
“Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he called upon the name of the LORD, the Everlasting God.”
My daughter told me that Father Mike touched on this as well on Day 11 in his Podcast. I didn't realize this. Maybe Isaac's older age is a well known thing? I grew up believing he was a child. My perspectives have shifted greatly on this topic & the flood after reading Enoch.
Really enjoying the Bible study! Thank you Adrian!
He called her out on it! Lol Then as Adrian pointed out God commands them to name him Issac which means " he laughs" in Hebrew.
Why did God think this was an important footnote? I laugh at times which might be inappropriate, because im uncomfortable or things are so absurd, all you can do is laugh. They doubted God and it was important to repeat that doubt. So we could see how good God is to us. What he says he means.
I started looking up the trees and names of places where the Abraham 'calls on the name of the Lord' or God appears to Abraham. So interesting that these trees are specifically named as places of meeting, covenant and alliance, and specific trees would've meant different things to the ancient hebrews, for example Alon means Oak tree associated with divine encounter, covenant and judgement. It's really highlighting to me how trees are seen as portals in paganism and shamanism, and how this system was abused to astral project to the underworld etc and use trees to create alters and covenants with evil/dark intention.
This is a seesaw - horrified for Lot’s daughters that he offered them up to a mob for rape, then horrified for Lot that those same daughters got him blackout drunk and raped him. Sheesh.
Ya’ll, according to this, and I need to read further to see where they got this information. Sarai was actually Abrams half sister. 😳 So he wasn’t entirely lying when he told the Egyptian’s she was his sister. Gosh, Genesis is just full of incest and craziness that is so unacceptable today, thank God. I don’t know how it was ever ok for God to bless these people except when the whole of the world comes from two people then 8, incest isn’t much of a choice. 🥴
I find it fascinating that Jewish people today have very strict laws about not eating milk and meat together or even having milk and meat in the same section in the fridge but when God appears to Abraham in 18:8 he serves milk and meat to Adonai.
Jewish tradition suggests that Rebecca, was just 3 years old when she left her father’s house to marry Isaac. What is with the Jews and children because it kinda doesn’t make sense that her family brought out Rebecca to ask her if she would go if she’s three years old? Like how do they come to that conclusion? Also a three-year-old was getting water from the well??? I think too many of them have a sick perversion with having sex with children is what I think.
Yeah, it seemed to be mixed as I researched it, but I said All on the 14 years old just cause I have to within my own spirit. 🥹 and still 40-year-old Isaac loving 14-year-old Rebecca that I thought was so sweet when I was reading the story just seems not so sweet anymore, but I guess it was for that time.🥴
Every time I read Genesis and Noah’s story, I think of the book series “A Wrinkle in Time,” for older children/tweens. My Aunt sent it to my daughter and as I was reading it, I was like, wait a second, this is the creation story. I highly recommend if you haven’t read it, not just for your kids but for you. It’s a beautiful series.
I had forgotten that Abram lies to the Pharaoh about Sarai being his sister, so she is taken into the Pharaoh’s house as one of his wives… while Abram accepts all the bride price gifts for giving her away. Just… damn. I have really struggled with the treatment of women in the bible.
It sounds like she's on board ? I would rather live in a palace than in the dirt... just saying 😂 And not once, but twice! She would do anything for his safety, but trust in the Lord was really all she needed. Or maybe she was in it for the money... og gold digger? Lol
Yeah… she was given the ultimate Hall Pass (and later she will have no problem telling Abraham to be with Hagar)… but, he told her it was necessary to save his life so, what is she going to do but make the best of it?
I wondered about this and her sleeping with Pharaoh...and the fact the Lord made her barren so she would't conceive children by anyone other than Abraham, at the appointed time.
Ya’ll Sarah and Abraham cause a lot of mess and are still favored by God. Then I read proverbs, and if I don’t get my ish together, I’m going to suffer. I don’t understand. 🥹😂
OK, something I wondered is why the scripture Genesis 3522 is there about Ruben going and laying with Bilhah, and Israel finding out about it. Because literally nothing happens after that so like what was the point of that scripture. So then going and researching it I’m tripping out at the things people come up with like somebody wrote a whole article called the rape of Bilhah. Like how did you get that from what’s written. Maybe because I have ADHD or I think I might be slightly autistic but I take everything very literally and so I just don’t understand how people make up all these things from scripture that aren’t there. Also, it said that Jacob withdrew Ruben’s blessing his first born. I’m like does that come later because I don’t see that here either. 😂
Hi! This confused me last year too, so funny you bring it up because I think I can help clear up your questions with additional context!
Bilhah was Jacob's concubine, which is like one of his wives, she was also Rachel's maid. From looking deeper into it- in the ancient east, him sleeping with her was a power move by Ruben, challenging Jacob's authority in a way. Questionable if Bilhah consented or not, but either way it seems Ruben was at fault. And ultimately, since it was an act of dishonor, at the end of Israel/ Jacob's life in Genesis 49 he makes it clear that he did not forget what his son did, and takes away his birthright because a first born's birthright represents not only inheritance and authority but responsibility, which clearly Ruben dishonored. Hope that helps :)

Wow that is such an interesting note on Isaac and makes so much sense

“No, you did laugh” took me out 😂

I really appreciate all the maps and charts!! Thank you for doing this study, Adrian! The Bible is so fascinating

This has really horrified me for some time...I still can't quite work it out.

3 years old translate to 14 years old

The way they have to be so specific about how old everyone was when they had children

Okay - only 6 verses into today’s reading and I have lost all sympathy for Sarai… she perpetuated abuse on another woman - her Egyptian slave. Rough.
